Archaeological museum of Mytilene

Location: Mytilene

The museum hosts various archaeological findings from the late neolithic age to the late roman period, including mosaic floors, wall-paintings, marble statues, as well as everyday objects.

 

Petrified Forest Natural History Museum

Location: Sigri, approx. 1½ hours drive from Mytilene

The Petrified Forest of Lesvos is the largest petrified forest in the world, and an extraordinary monument of global geological heritage. Its creation, over 20.000.000 years ago, is related to the intense volcanic activity during the Miocene period.

 

Vrisa National History Museum

ΤLocation: Vatera, approx. 45 minutes drive from Mytilene

The Vrisa region in Vatera is exceptionally known for its impressive Palaeolithic fossils of gazelles, horses, deer, and tortoises, indicative of an early savannah environment. The museum provides detailed information regarding the geological history of Lesvos.

Theophilos Museum

Location: Varia, just outside Mytilene, a few minutes walk from the Campus

Founded in 1964 by Teriade (Stratis Eleftheriadis), the museum houses around 90 paintings by Theophilos, a major folk painter of Neo-Hellenic art. The museum is located in the district of Varia, which is believed to be Theofilos’ birthplace.

Founded in 1972, this museum-library houses paintings of Theophilos, Chagall, Giacometti, Le Corbusier, Miro, Picasso, alongside with books illustrated by these artists.

 

Vrana Olive-Press Museum

Location: Papados, Gera; approx. 25 minutes drive from Mytilene

The olive press Museum in Papados is one of the first steam-powered factories of the industrial revolution in Lesvos. Particularly interesting are the old facility’s financial books, one of the rarest and most comprehensive financial records for their time.

 

Jakobides Digital Art Museum

Location: Chidira, approx. 1½ hours drive from Mytilene

The museum presents the life and work of Georgios Jakobides, who was the founder and first curator of the National Gallery in Athens. His artwork is presented through a variety of digital means.

 

Plomari Folk Museum

Location: Plomari, approx. 1 hour drive from Mytilene

The museum depicts the traditional way of life in Plomari Lesvos, housing traditional outfits, pieces of furniture, photographs, tools, textiles and other everyday items.

 

Barbayanni Ouzo Museum

Location: Plomari, approx. 1 hour drive from Mytilene

The museum is located next to the homonymous Barbayanni distillery in Plomari, showcasing the original equipment and techniques used to bottle and label the famous Ouzo drink.
